Student wellbeing
Like all NSW public schools, we provide safe learning and teaching environments to encourage healthy, happy, successful and productive students.
The department is committed to creating quality learning opportunities for children and young people. These opportunities support wellbeing through positive and respectful relationships and fostering a sense of belonging to the school and community.
The Wellbeing Framework for Schools helps schools support the cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of students and allows them to connect, succeed and thrive throughout their education.
Strategies to support good discipline and effective learning
The school wellbeing policy outlines in detail the following programs and strategies that are implemented K – 6 to support students in learning the skills of good discipline and effective learning. These include:
SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN LEARNING through the provision of an appropriate curriculum and high quality teaching;
STOP THINK DO. This program teaches students positive social skill development and the skills necessary for the peaceful resolution of conflict. Students are provided with lessons K – 6 in the Stop Think Do process each year. This process is as follows:
The RED light cues students to STOP before they react impulsively and to work out what is actually happening, how those involved are feeling and what they want to happen.
The YELLOW light cues students to THINK about what they could do to solve the problem and the likely consequences of those possibilities. The emphasis is on learning HOW to think of positive solutions.
Here students consider options for solving the problem and these include: COOL, AGRO, FRIENDLY or WEAK ways.
The GREEN light cues students to choose the solution with the best consequences and DO it. If it does not work they repeat the STOP THINK DO process and seek support from a mediator.
The Playground Mediator Program Year 6 students are trained each year as playground mediators. Students are rostered to support students at lunchtime to solve problems using the STOP THINK DO process. Playground mediators are located at the TRAFFIC LIGHT sign in the playground each lunchtime.
Student Leadership Council
This program aims to:
provide a forum for student opinion
support and guide the development of students' leadership skills and capacities promote improvement throughout the school

Student Councillors are appointed each year and meet regularly to discuss plans and issues.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
At our school, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning – a whole-school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate where students can learn and develop. Our whole school community works together to establish expected behaviours and teach them to all students.
Sandon Public School is a ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning' (PBL) school. PBL is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student wellbeing and behavior.
Our PBL SHINE Values are: SHOW RESPECT, HONESTY, INLCUDE OTHERS, NEVER GIVE UP AND ENGAGE IN LEARNING).
The goal of our PBL program is to regularly promote and frequently acknowledge children for their demonstration of these values in and across the different school settings (playground, classroom, sporting activities etc).
Throughout the year, the children participate in lessons designed to support them in learning more about our school values and how our school should look when these are being demonstrated.
