Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

How to Make a POP Payment

HOW TO ACCESS PARENT ONLINE PAYMENT (POP)

Go to the Sandon Public School website: www.sandon-p.schools.nsw.gov.au
Click on the Make a Payment tab at the top of the page. You will now be in a secure Westpac payment page.

There are 4 payment sections: 1. Student Details Enter Student name, Class or Year and Date of Birth, then Click Next Section. Note: Leave Student registration number and Reference number BLANK.

2. Contact Details Enter contact details, then Click Next Section.

3. Payment Items Select a Payment Type from the drop down menu. Enter a Description e.g. “Thalgarrah excursion”, “School Fee”, “Yr 6 Farewell”. Enter an Amount.

On this screen there is also the option to Add another payment.

4. Card Details Enter the required information, then click on Proceed to Confirmation.

Please record your receipt number and date of payment on the Permission note, then return the Permission note to the school.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

NRL and CRL Visit

Tim Mannah- Parramatta Eels captain, along with representatives from NRL and CRL made a surprise visit to Purple K today to say hello. Purple K and some of the Sandon touch footy team were lucky enough to have a chat with Tim about the importance of eating well and working hard at school, and then went out for a quick game of footy on the top oval. It's fair to say Tim gained some new fans. Tim is in town as part of the NRLs 'Roads to Regions' program and we will have more visitors from the NRL and Jillaroos at school tomorrow.

All the students and their classes have been practising items to perform on this very special night. Every class will be in the spotlight, and look forward to sharing their great talents with all parents/carers/relatives/friends. Everyone is invited to come and watch our spectacular display of ‘Colours’. We encourage all families to stay for the whole performance as there is a finale which involves all students. Students need to be in their classroom at 5pm to get changed and prepare for their item.

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Dear Parents/Carers,
The final rehearsal is on Saturday 20 October 9:30 –11am – Lazenby Hall.

There are two concerts on Sunday 21 October.

Sandon Public School will be in the first concert, 11am – 1:00pm (arrive 9:30- Please note this is a change in time from the original note) Lazenby Hall.

Both these days are at Lazenby Hall, UNE and parents will be required to provide transport for their child to and from these events.

Please provide morning tea and a water bottle for your child.

As in previous years we will have a dress code for all students in the Primary choir for the concerts on the final weekend. All students are required to wear the clothes listed below – if they don’t own black pants, these can be bought inexpensively at local chain stores.

During the first weekend of the Term 3 holidays, Dan and Masie travelled to Dubbo to play for Narwan under 12's in the Aboriginal football knockout.
Their team did really well and won all their games on the Friday putting them into the semi finals on the Monday. Unfortunately they lost the semis but they made it to the top 4 out of 21 teams.

The Sandon Sparkles team played their grand final game on Saturday against ACSC. It was a great game and the girls played their hearts out. Unfortunately the girls didn't win, but were still super happy to come away with runners up.

Some of these girls have been playing in the Sandon team since it started 4 years ago and this was the last year before they all move into high school.

They are the kindest, most loving bunch of girls and it has been such a pleasure coaching them again this year! They always make me super proud!!

Responsible Pet Education Program

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Friday 21st September, a teacher from the Responsible Pet Education Program is coming to visit Sandon.

She will be bringing a pet dog to come and help teach the children how to be safe around dogs and how to say hello to dogs with their owners! There will be lots of listening, role plays, singing and some dancing.

There will be 2 sessions for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students during the morning, in the library. It is a free session and all students from Red, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Pink class will attend with their teachers.

If your child is afraid of dogs or you have any concerns please let your child teacher know before the 21st September.

On Monday the 13th August, the following Year 4 students attended the North West PSSA Gymnastics Gala day. The girls all performed extremely well given the freezing morning. There were 116 competitors from different schools in the North West. Abby received a silver for the level 1 competition, Alma a gold for Level 2 and Ella a silver for level 3. Well done!

Dear Parents

I have discussed with the staff how we can stop interrupting teaching and learning. From today office staff will not phone the classroom unless it is an emergency.

If students or staff need to have messages and or reminders sent through there will be written notes in pigeon holes. These notes can only be collected by the class teacher during the break times of 11:00 -11:30am and 1:30 – 2:00pm.

If you are making differing arrangements for your child/children please send a written note to the class teacher on the morning of the change.

For students that have regular appointments during class time teachers will assist by putting visual reminders up in the classroom.

Due to staffing levels and the requirements of work load within the front office, office staff will not be able to go get students or phone through.

Changes to School Uniform Policy

Attention parents/carers: Changes to School Uniform Policy and associated guidelines

The NSW Department of Education has revised the School Uniform Policy and associated guidelines following an extensive review and consultation process, including with the NSW Parents and Citizens Association. The revised School Uniform Policy requirements include that:

all students have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities, including physical activities while wearing a school uniform
girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants
consideration is given to cost and how to assist families, including for schools to inform parents how they can access financial support to purchase school uniform items.

The revised School Uniform Policy and associated guidelines can be found at the link: School Uniform Policy.

Where changes are required to a school's uniform, there must be formal consultation with students, teachers and other staff, parents or carers, and the school community (including the Parents and Citizens' Association). Parents and carers should be given up to 3 years to comply with any changes.

This is your opportunity to have your say via a submission on how you would like to see supported school transport operate in our State. The consultation period will end on 20 July at 5:00pm.

There will be some face-to-face consultations held throughout the state, full details will be updated on their website when they are available.

We watched an old movie in black and white showing a family cooking, setting the table, dressing up and eating dinner together. Many children were unfamiliar with setting a table so we decided to do it to eat our lunch! We even made an arrangement using plants from the playground to put in the middle to our tables. It was great fun eating our lunch with knives and forks. I think we will do it again.

Healthy Kids Association, with the support of NSW Health, organised The Big Vegie Crunch – a record-breaking attempt to have the most Aussie kids eating vegies simultaneously! On Thursday the 1st March at 10am sharp, more than 450 primary schools and 100,000 students across NSW counted down to "crunch time", when they all crunched on vegies together. Thanks to more than 292 schools across NSW, they absolutely smashed last year's record - 47,920 students crunched at 10am on Thursday 1st March with a further 11,915 students crunching at other times over Vegetable Week.

Here's how you can ‘pledge to eat more veg' as a family!

YOUR CHANCE TO WALK THROUGH THE NEW ARMIDALE HOSPITAL

I write to invite you to join with me on a tour through the completed $60 million Armidale Hospital redevelopment, before it officially opens to patients later this month.

A community open day will be held and tours conducted through the hospital on Saturday, 17 February.

I've been lucky enough to inspect progress throughout the past 15 months of construction and I'm confident you'll be just as thrilled as me by the world-class facilities and improved clinical services.

The open day will be an excellent opportunity to walk through two levels of the new four-storey building, view the vastly improved facilities and equipment and talk to health professionals about how the redevelopment will benefit healthcare in our region.

This redevelopment had been talked about for more than a decade, but now it is a reality. Medical staff are currently acclimatising to the new equipment and facilities within the new building and the grand opening of the facility is planned for next month. As it will soon be fully operational, this open day is likely to be your best chance to see the new hospital first-hand.

The Armidale Hospital Open Day will be held on Saturday, 17 February, between 11am and 1pm. A free barbecue lunch will also be on offer.

The newly completed building offers:

· A brand new Emergency Department

· Four new operating theatres and procedure room

· A new and expanded Critical Care Unit

· A new Medical Inpatient Unit

· A new Central Sterilising Supplies Department

· Improved Day Surgery Unit

· Improved Mortuary Facilities

Refugees to resettle in Armidale

This year, Armidale will resettle a significant number of refugee families. This month, we will welcome the first families into our community and into our schools.

It means that we have a great opportunity to make a contribution to rebuilding the lives of a small number of the world's 22.5 million refugees, half of whom are under 18 years of age.

It's an opportunity for students, parent, teachers and all members of the school community to work together to demonstrate our commitment to our school as the centre of the community, as an open, inclusive and welcoming environment.

Schools play a critical role in successful settlement for refugees. They are places of safety and can provide security and connections to assist resettlement which is critical in enabling refugees to overcome the impacts of trauma and loss, and adjust to life in Australia.

The achievement of successful education outcomes is perhaps the single factor that has the greatest impact on a refugee young person's future success and economic independence, and the capacity to achieve goals and dreams. As an education centre, with great schools, we are in an excellent position to assist our new students to achieve outstanding outcomes.

It is timely for us to remember that, while a refugee's journey begins with danger, it also begins with hope. And it takes courage. Refugees need courage to keep going in the face of devastating loss and trauma. They need the courage to leave all that is familiar and to step into the unknown in search of safety and peace. It also takes courage to begin again, to work hard and to maintain hope in an unfamiliar land.

As school community members, I encourage you to work in partnership with school staff and leaders in helping our new arrivals, both students and their families, to feel welcome and to build the sense of belonging that becomes a foundation for their new lives, as some of the newest Australians in our community.

25 years ago Sandon Primary School opened its doors to students in demountable buildings that were located at the front of the school. What a difference 25 years makes!

To celebrate our 25th birthday students and staff celebrated with a birthday cake today.

Lindy Commens was the class teacher on Purple class when Sandon opened, so it was fitting that she cut the birthday cake. Belinda Clarke was the class teacher on Green class in 1993, and after an absence of many years Belinda has re-joined us this year. Chase Chaffey, who started in Kindergarten today is the son of Alexander Chaffey who was one of the students who commenced at Sandon on that first day.

Keeping your kids safe online is easy with a few simple precautions.

Nothing replaces parental supervision and education for kids about cybersafety.
Set a technology curfew.
Remind your child to never give out identifying information such as your home address, school name or telephone number in a public message such as chat or newsgroups.
If your child posts photos online, use privacy settings to limit access to people they know well.
Remind your child that people don't always tell the truth online, and they can't take anything at face value.
Reassure your child that they can tell you anything, without fear of losing the laptop or internet access.
If they get a message or email that's threatening or rude, they should'STOP, BLOCK, TELL'. First step is to tell your child to stop responding to the abuse and then block those people sending threatening or rude messages if they continue. Let your child know that if they are being bullied, or know someone else who is, they should tell a trusted adult.
Never click on any links that are contained in emails from people they don't know. As well as sexual content, they could contain a computer virus.
If you suspect your child has been contacted by a predator, try to save a copy of the chat log (or whatever form the contact takes) for evidence. Call Crime Stoppers 24-hour line 1800 333 000 to make a formal complaint.
Your child will be using computers and the technology for the rest of their lives – you're in the great position of being able to get them off to a safe, positive start.

Week 6 is has been and gone. 3/4G has enjoyed getting back to a bit or normality after such a busy week 5 with assessments. Students are immersed in our novel study of ‘The BFG' right now. There have been huge belly laughs that could surely be heard at the office caused by the humorous words in the book.

We have been working hard on book reviews over the past couple of weeks and have produced some pleasing work samples. We recently reviewed ‘The Little Wooden Horse' by Mark Wilson, a book that was all about the first fleet and the conditions the convicts had to endure on their sea voyage. This tied in nicely with our HSIE unit ‘British Colonisation' as it gave us a bit more of an insight into what life was like during those times.

I have enjoyed listening to some fantastic ‘multicultural speaking' presentations over the past two weeks. It was pleasing to hear students draw on both personal experiences and factual information to support their arguments. Well done everyone!!!

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate all of our K/1R students for the way they engaged and gave their best effort in our semester one assessment tasks. Our Sandon SHINE values were clearly evident in all you have done.

K/1R is learning how to use Thinking partners in class for a variety of tasks. We have enjoyed reading The Gruffalo and journey of a sea turtle during the last couple of weeks. The conversation and discussions around these texts have been rich in developing deeper comprehension skills. The students are enjoying responding to and writing about the Gruffalo and his friends in English sessions.

We hope you enjoyed our presentation of our artworks at assembly today. For those who missed it we have studied the artwork of Asher Bilu. We were inspired by the way he creates multimedia artworks about the elements and after viewing and responding to his piece ‘The forms that swim and the shapes that creep under the waters of sleep', 1988 we created our own under water pieces. We used a variety of materials and discussed the miniature creatures we found in the water at Dumaresq Dam. The artworks produced are fantastic. They are on display in our classroom and will be on display in the office foyer in Weeks 8 & 9.

The athletics carnival is coming up next week, so we will be practising our athletics skills in P.E. this week. We hope to see you there. Have a fantastic week!

This week 4/5D has had a very small class due to the Stage 3 excursion to Lake Ainsworth. We have studied a very interesting artist to inspire us with our art sessions. His name is Wassily Kandinsky (vas-ily ka-din-skee). He listens to Richard Wagner music to inspire his art. 4/5D has been doing lots of sport, art and Science.

In maths we have been working on our six times tables and are getting really fast. We look forward to another great week at Sandon!!!

Green

Green class has been extremely busy over that past few weeks. We have been learning about wet and dry environments, transport, literary recounts and number patterns. We have also enjoyed creating artworks based on our wet and dry environments unit. Some of our creations have been desert landscapes and hybrid land and water animals. Last week we had a special visitor come to visit green class. Mrs Barker brought her baby kangaroo in for us to say hello to.

Our favourite part of the day is our big book shared reading time. Also in green class we have some aspiring chefs who have been enjoying cooking up a storm! So far they have successfully made mini pikelets and fried rice.

Our class has had a busy schedule this week. Listening to the students Multicultural speeches has been fantastic. The students have put a lot of time and practise into their speeches and have delivered them with confidence and excellent speaking skills.

We are finding our study of Australian history fascinating. We are gaining a better understanding of what life was like in the early days of European settlement and the effects this had on indigenous people.

We are gearing up for next week's Athletics carnival. I am sure the whole class will participate and have fun.

Kindergarten has been making wonderful progress in reading! The children all love to read and are always keen to share their books with others. Thank you to all those parents who have been supporting their child with home readers. The opportunity for the children to read with their family is very important and will play an important role in their reading development. If you have any questions about home readers please come and have a chat with us.

We have stared our new science unit ‘What's it made of?' We are investigating our classroom and playground environment to discover what materials we can find. We are looking at the properties of materials such as metal, wood, rubber, glass and plastic.

The children are very excited about our athletics carnival and we hope to see as many parents and carers as possible who have time to come and share the fun with us. If you have not returned your permission note could you please do so.

We are well and truly over halfway through Term 2 and have had a busy week of assessments.

2E has been looking at synonyms this week and how words change when they become plurals.
In Health we have been looking at how we can keep safe at home. In HSIE we looked at a map of Australia in the Atlas then on their own copies of a map the students coloured in the parts of Australia that are deserts, mountains, grasslands and forests. We also used a key to help locate these environments on our maps.
2E has been learning about multiplication and division in Maths. We used counters to make groups to help us visualise the sums.
We have started our study of an artist for Education Week and are looking at Olive Cotton who was an Australian photographer.

1/2D

1/2D has been working very diligently this week while Mrs E has been away. In Science, we looked at a mountain and some hills made from sand and predicted what might happen when coloured water was tipped over it – using plastic cups with holes in the bottom of them. This represented rain in the water cycle. Our predictions were correct! The water ran down the side of the mountain and the hills and into the valleys, where pools of water formed.

In HSIE, we read information about rainforests and learnt about the different ‘layers' of plants that grow in them. We read the book ‘Where the forest meets the sea', by Jeannie Baker, and painted magnificent artworks afterwards.

General School Contribution

Thank you to all parents/carers who have already paid the annual General School Contribution for 2013. As previously indicated, the Sandon PS P and C set the amount for our annual General School Contribution each year. The funds raised from these contributions support the school in purchasing much needed basic materials and equipment to support the day-to-day learning programs delivered in your child's class.

As well the P and C sets an annual Art and Craft fee to assist in purchasing special materials so that we can implement our art and craft program.

The fees this year are outlined below. Please note that the P and C endeavours to keep these costs as low as possible in order to ensure that most parents can support the school (and more importantly their children) in this way.

The school year has forty weeks. This works out to be just $1 per week to support your child's education at our wonderful school. If all families were able to pay, this would bring an additional $7200 into the school to support learning programs and the acquisition of essential resources.

On Wednesday 26^th June, we will be once again celebrating NAIDOC Day at Sandon PS.

NAIDOC Week (‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee') celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

This year at Sandon we have another series of celebratory activities planned this year and the theme is WE VALUE THE VISION. Please see an outline of the over the page and we hope that as many of our Sandon PS community can join us in these special celebrations.

Athletics Carnival

Our annual athletics carnival is being held on the 13^th June at PLC oval. Notes were sent home this week about this event. It would be appreciated if you could return the permission note as soon as possible so that we can book the necessary buses. The carnival at PLC will focus on track events.

Field event trials (long jump, high jump, shot put and discus) have been completed at school during Tuesday afternoon sport sessions. The first two placegetters in each age division will compete in the Zone Championships which will be held in Term 3.

As many of you know, each year, Sandon Public School loves to celebrate HARMONY DAY and GRANDPARENTS' DAY.

Once again this year we are excited to welcome grandparents to the school to spend time with their grandchildren while acknowledging Harmony Day at the same time.

As a special ‘added extra' this year, we have decided to use this day to officially launch our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) SHINE VALUES.

Shortly an invitation will be sent home to each family inviting grandparents and parents / carers to join us in this special celebration. A program of events will also be sent home shortly in the newsletter so that everyone knows exact times for each part of the day. In the meantime, please reserve this date in your diary.

Half Day Public Holiday - Armidale Cup

Parents / carers will all now have received a note outlining the fact that Sandon Public School will not be operational on Monday afternoon 18^th March from 12:00 noon onwards.

As this has been gazetted under the Public Holidays Act of 2010 the public holiday applies to all employees working in the Armidale Dumaresq Council area.

The school day for all children attending on Monday 18 March will conclude at 12pm midday and parents/carers will be responsible for the care and supervision of children for the remainder of the day … as is consistent with all public holidays.

Further information regarding bus and students utilising assisted transport services via taxi will be sent home as soon as it has become available.

The annual school fete is the Sandon Public School P and C's major fundraising event for 2013. All proceeds from the fete will go towards providing our children with much needed classroom resources and towards the completion of a playground for our special education classroom.

Swimming Carnival

Thank you to all of you who were able to attend our annual Swimming Carnival event this week.

Sincere thanks to the teaching and admin staff who both assisted in the organisation and attended the carnival. We can only hold this event at twilight due to the goodwill and generosity of the staff.

School Photos

Sandon students always look superb in their uniform each day but we would remind parents / carers to please send their children to school in full school uniform so that classes look really smart for their photo. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Food Allergies

Some children attending Sandon PS have food allergies and intolerances. In particular, a few students have severe allergies to peanuts and tree nuts... (For example almonds/walnuts). For this reason students are prohibited from SHARING FOOD with friends and we ask that parents / carers reinforce this with their children.

We also ask that food containing peanuts and nut products not be sent to school in your child's lunchboxes to assist in avoiding /preventing what can be life-threatening anaphylactic reactions for those children affected.

If your child does suffer from allergies of any kind, please ensure that the school is made aware of this.

Crunch and Sip

Each year, Sandon Public School continues to try and promote healthy eating and living. As a Good for Kids Good for Life school we encourage children to participate in our daily CRUNCH AND SIP program.

As most of you know, this involves children bringing a piece of fruit or vegetable to school to ‘crunch' as part of a class break each day (each class teacher has their own regime for this). Children will also be encouraged to ‘sip' water only during lessons as appropriate.

We would ask parents/carers to continue providing their children with:

* a piece of vegetable or fruit each day

* a small clear plastic water bottle to keep in the classroom (clear to ensure ‘water sipping only'.)

It’s Not OK to Be Away…or To Be Late

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Regular school attendance enables students to maximise their full educational potential and to actively participate and engage in their learning. At Sandon Public School, it is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

As you know, when children miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them to catch up on missed work or resulting in significant delays in learning, they often miss important interactions with their peers, which can compound issues of social isolation and low self-esteem.

As a school community we have high expectations that all students with the support of their parents/carers will attend school every day and arrive on time to begin learning.

Government legislation requires students between the ages of six and seventeen to be enrolled at a government or registered non-government school and to attend school on each day that instruction is provided. It is the duty of the parent or caregiver of these students, under the Education Reform Act 1990 to ensure these obligations are fulfilled. The Act also specifies that absences must be explained within 7 days of the occurrence.

Under the legislation, our school is required to contact parents for all unexplained absences and seek reasons for the absence after 2 days. I am aware that sometimes parents do forget to inform the school as to why their child has been away.

We would ask that parents / carers are vigilant in contacting the school via note or phonecall to explain any absences. We would also remind parents that for special reasons (such as a family holiday), I can approve exemption so that absences are not part of a child's attendance record. Please speak with the ladies in the front office if you wish to enquire about this.

Each term, the NSW Department of Education and Training Home School Liaison Officer visits the school to inspect our attendance records and will follow-up on significant patterns of non-attendance and also on large numbers of unexplained absences.

As a school, our key message is that "IT'S NOT OK TO BE AWAY."

Of course there will be times, such as illness or genuinely extenuating family circumstances which result in absences from school but these should be a rarity rather than the norm. We would ask that all parents/carers support their children in regular attendance at school.

Semester 2 Reports

Next Friday 14th December, parents/carers will be receiving their child's Semester Two Report for 2012. Once again, this will be using the new report format which provides parents/carers with information regarding their child's achievement as compared to stage outcomes and what has been taught this semester.
Student achievement will be indicated in the form of a five-sale terminology (Limited to Outstanding) and an effort rating scale (1 – 5). Kindergarten will be slightly different. Sandon PS reports are fully compliant with NSW Department of Education and Communities policies and standards.
We appreciate that parents/carers recognise the considerable amount of work that goes into the preparation of these reports. Should you wish to clarify any information regarding your child's report, please don't hesitate to speak with your child's teacher.

Week 6 Class News

Purple class news
Purple Class students and staff are certainly a healthy and happy bunch of people. We continue to look in our lunch boxes every day to determine which are healthy foods and which foods are treats. The students have all loved receiving a sticker on their chart when they have healthy foods each day.
We were very lucky to have a mum come in last week to make us some delicious sweet rice dessert for cooking.
In a couple of weeks we will be going shopping to buy the ingredients for cooking that week. I will send home a permission note next week regarding this.
Parents would have received IEP meeting notes this week. We look forward to these meetings to discuss your goals and priorities for your child for 2013. If the times I have given you are not suitable, please let me know and we will organise another time.

KG class news
In KG we often use the books we have read to inspire our own writing. This week it was a particularly mundane topic that got us writing really well! We read the book "I've got nits!" by Mike Brownlow and started to learn the song "Nasty little Lice".
The following stories have been written by some of the children in KG – names have been removed for privacy.

I had nits one day. The nits felt itchy. I didn't like it. I wish they didn't happen.
Head lice are very itchy and you can get rid of them if you use special shampoo.
We need to wash our hair. You have to put special shampoo on. We get nits from all around the world.
Head lice are as small as an ant. They like clean hair. They like sucking blood. They have nippers.

In our writing this week the children have been trying to be 5 star writers. A 5 star writer writes two or more sentences that the teacher can read, starts with a capital letter, uses finger spaces and punctuation (capital letters in the right places and full stops or question marks). A number of children in the class are 5 star writers already and there are more who are determined to be one soon.

As this is the final Class news for 2012 I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parent helpers for their help in the classroom this year. Having willing ears to listen to emerging readers has really helped the children progress. Thank you also to all the parents who have supported their children by listening to them read at home. It is almost time for a stocktake of our Home Readers so please return them by the end of next week.

5/6B class news
It has been a lively week for 5/6B with lots of things happening. On Monday we had a lady come and talk to us about the school's Positive Behaviour for Learning Program. One thing the students had to do was choose 10 items from a list that they would take if they were stranded in the ocean on a life raft. This created some very interesting discussion in the groups. All the students were shocked to discover that pet food was a valid contribution to staying alive.
On Thursday the Year 6 students who are going to Duval High School and Armidale High School next year were able to spend the day at their respective future schools. Everyone reported having had a great time and feeling more comfortable with high school.   Students were able to sample some future lessons and some enjoyed a treasure hunt.
Last Friday, 20 year 6 students attended Science in the Bush at the UNE.   This was designed to expose students to the possibilities within the scientific field. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day with explosions, bangs, smells and many other creative and interesting chemical reactions happening. Their favourite events at the UNE would have been the lecture on chemistry and their time in the lab experimenting with chemical reactions.
In class we are continuing to work on our novel unit, DragonKeeper. 5/6B is highly motivated in this subject and is creating many wonderful projects in response to the themes in the novel.   I have been extremely impressed by the meanings the students have drawn out of the unit.
Just a reminder to the parents of year 5 to return the note indicating whether you are or are not interested in your child going on a potential excursion to Lake Ainsworth next year.

1TE class news
In 1TE we've been enthusiastically learning about our Term 4 topic – Growing and Changing. We've drawn a timeline of our lives so far, looked at some people's baby photos – even Miss Rees' and drawn a self-portrait.
We've visited 1/2C's classroom to view the development of Mr Commens' eggs. The eggs had to stay in the incubator, which kept them warm, for twenty one days. On our first visit we saw the eye of a chick and some of its veins. Mr Commens shone a torch through a tube in a darkened room for us to be able to see through the shell.
We had lots of questions to ask like, "How does the chick breath inside the egg?" The answer is that there is an air sack inside the egg and lots of little holes on the shell for oxygen to enter it. We also learnt that the yolk becomes part of the chick's stomach, so that the chick has food for the first couple of days of its life. Thank you very much Mr Commens and 1/2C for inviting us into your classroom. You taught us so much and we think your eight baby chicks are just gorgeous!

3/4SG class news
Here we are, halfway through the term already and we have started Child Protection Lessons. Yesterday we learnt all about "No, Go, Tell". Poetry writing has been happening the past few weeks and an example of our work is being displayed in the classroom.
Mr Griffith has been teaching a unit on "Machines" and we had lots of fun making / designing machines from clay. Our class book for this term is Charlotte's Web and in HSIE we are studying "Australian Communities". We will soon find out how the Red Cross and the Country Women's Association contribute to our community.

4/5G class news
We've become quite the expert multipliers and dividers lately. We're even multiplying and dividing decimals. The students really are going to be quite the expert Christmas shoppers. Speaking of which, we've begun looking at procedural texts, which has given us the exciting opportunity to enjoy some art and craft. There are some very colourful and very beautiful creations coming home at the end of year.
Sadly, we've finished reading "Danny, Champion of the World", although we're still working on literacy activities associated with the novel. Our child protection lessons have given us a chance to discuss feelings and what they mean to us.

2H class news
2H have been very busy this term learning about descriptive writing. We have been practising writing similes to go in our descriptions, for example, "My dad is as funny as a clown", "The leaves on the tree were as red as flames" and "His eyes are as blue as the sky".
In art with Margarete, we have been making a frieze (a long horizontal poster) that shows how our sunflower seeds have changed over time. Soon we will be planting sweet pea seeds. In a few weeks, we will be travelling to Saumarez Homestead to look at things from the past. We are very excited!

3/4 F class news
This week and last week we have been doing projects on simple machines and complex machines. We have also been learning music and playing cricket. Mrs Frizell has built us a handwriting castle to improve our handwriting so that we can get our pen licenses.
We have been learning music and we have been pairing up and acting as machines with instruments. We have been learning a song with instruments. Every instrument has a different colour that we have to follow in a book.
The class has been experimenting with screws, wheels, axles, inclined planes, pullies and other machines.

K/1R class news
K/1R has been learning about numbers and patterns. The children are getting very clever at writing numbers. In mathematics we have completed a lot of graphing work. We used graphs to record the results of our teddy bear lucky dip and our dice rolling games. It was fun!
In spelling K/1R has been learning about th, wh, ou, ow words. The children now have a large bank of words that they can spell.
It is great to be finished our assessment tasks and K/1R is looking forward to learning more before the end of the school year.

1/2C class news
1/2C's science unit for the term was called ‘Growing and Changing". As part of our unit we hatched some chicken eggs. Firstly I purchased one dozen fertilised chicken eggs. 1TE joined in along with 2H as we had to turn the eggs three times a day, even on weekends. We all had a turn at turning the eggs.
On Thursday of last week, we were astonished to discover that six of the eggs had hatched overnight. Just before recess, I noticed one was about to hatch, so I dashed next door and invited 4/5G in to watch. Just before lunch another one started to hatch while purple class were visiting.
We decided to name the chicks. They were named Fluffy, Gerdy, Nugget, Whiz, Brownie, Patrick, Lucky and Spider. One was named after Patrick as it was his birthday. We have been weighing the chickens to observe their weight gains. Whiz, who was the smallest of them all, doubled his weight in only five days.
1/2C feel proud about their accomplishment of having eight out of a dozen eggs hatch.
We have enjoyed our experience and sharing it with other classes.

5/6M Class News
5/6M has been busy working on a range of different things. We have been doing papier mache bowls for art and we have also been learning about the history of Vincent Van Gogh and his art works. We really enjoyed drawing sunflowers in art.
In class 5/6M has been researching facts about the Murray Darling Basin and we have learnt a lot of interesting facts about Morris Gleitzman that we didn't know before.
In class 5/6M has also been learning about farming and how we get our clothing and food. We have started an agricultural project; some people have chosen to do things like wool, cotton, fruit, meat, dairy, wheat, bread and pasta.
In Library with Miss Chorley we have been creating great iMovie's on the iPads; we have had so much fun making them. We have also been doing a project called ‘Earths Place in Space' we are having a lot of fun.
On Thursday 8th November, Year 6 students went to Duval High and Armidale High orientation days. We met a lot of teachers and students who we will be working with next year.
On Friday the 9th November some Year 6 students went to Science in the Bush excursion. We had the opportunity to do lots of exciting things like:
•   we watched things explode
•   we did fingerprints
•   we saw a show about science
•   we saw how our heart works and saw how we can change its rhythm
These are a few of the different exciting things we did at Science in the Bush.

Annual Community Breakfast

Thank you to all members of our wonderful Sandon Public School Community who were able to attend our annual Community Breakfast yesterday morning. It is always great to catch up with students and their families past and present.

HELP NEEDED - SANDON P and C ASSOCIATION

WOULD YOU CONSIDER GIVING UP AN HOUR OR SO PER MONTH TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION?
Over the past couple of years, we have seen the membership of the Sandon P and C Association slowly dwindling to the point that there are only a few members of our parent community who regularly attend meetings. At the same time, there are many more parents who are happy to assist in other ways to support their child and the school as a whole and we are most grateful for this.
We live in a very busy and sometimes event frantic world and of course we recognise the many and varied demands on people. However Sandon is now at the stage where if we do not start to see a few more parents attending our P and C meetings, we may not even be able to form a P and C executive next year. It is essential that we are able to maintain the body that drives the Sandon P and C's operation so this important and essential body is able to function and the workload (currently being carried by only a few), is able to be shared around a little more.
As most of you know, the P and C Association plays a vital role in the life of any school and there are many benefits. The P and C provides a forum:
•   which supports positive communication bringing parents, staff and citizens together in collaborative cooperation;
•   through which there is a sharing of essential information about school programs, policy and activities;
•   through which feedback can be attained regarding programs, policy and activities; and
•   which raises funds to support key programs, resources and events.
Research shows that there is a very strong correlation between the extent a parent is able to be involved with their child's school and the educational outcomes achieved.
The Sandon P and C Association is a very friendly and welcoming group. There is a very high level of trust between the school and the P and C Association and we do actually have fun as well. We would be so happy to see a few more members coming along each month in order to keep this important body alive and well and supporting a quality education for all at Sandon. Our next meeting will be held next Monday evening, 19th November at 6:30pm. We hope you might be able to join us.

Ed Alive Zoo Whizz Launch

On Tuesday morning, Sandon Public School was honoured to host the launch of new educational software for computers and iPads developed by the local company ‘EdAlive'.
Official guests include the Honourable Richard Torbay, Mayor Jim Maher, Deborah Kelleher (Principal PLC), Michael Wilson (Department of Education and Communities), and other members of the local community. Graham East from EdAlive and his team have been working on the development of this product for several years and we were most fortunate to be approached to be the launch school. Mac One donated a special Apple TV to assist the school in its ongoing use of iPads. Special thanks to Graham Commens and Jo Chorley for their assistance in co-organising this event and to Mrs Gadd for organising the zoo animal hats for some of our children to wear as part of the launch.

Year Six Farewell - Help Needed

At the end of each year, we like to formally acknowledge our Year 6 students as they move on to high school. To assist in staging a lovely event, it has been a long-standing tradition that Year 5 parents assist in the catering of the Year 6 Farewell… as their children will be in Year 6 the following year. This event has always been very well supported by Year 5 parents and students. Next Monday 12th November at 3:15pm, Mrs McCulloch would like to meet with all interested Year 5 parents to begin planning this important activity. A note has been sent home this week to Year 5 parents, explaining this in a little more detail. We look forward to your support of this event.

Recently the P and C raised over $1600 for their catering at the PSSA Rugby Carnival. We are so fortunate to have parents and carers who are willing to give of their time in support of the P and C and of course the school in this way. Relay for Life

Sincere thanks to all members of the Sandon Public School community who were able to make it to the Relay for Life last weekend and walked a few laps in memory of Noel Polson. While somewhat dusty by 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon, the spirit of the many people who were involved was inspirational. A special thank you must go to Melanie Pearson and Grant Clark for their leadership and co-ordination of our team.

New England Sings

Congratulations to all members of the school choir who participated in the New England Sings extravaganza last weekend. Sandon students joined with primary students from just about every other school in Armidale to be part of a massed choir performing beautiful two and three-part harmony pieces.
Our children also had the marvellous experience of singing with a full orchestra, secondary choir and bagpipes for the inspirational finale of John Farnham's ‘You're the Voice'.
Thank you to all parents for your support of your child's involvement in this valuable musical opportunity. Special thanks once again to Ms Hook for her superb support of the choir this year and also to Megan Goswell for the work they have done in preparing the children for this event.

Illness at School

We are currently experiencing a high number of students complaining of various ailments. Obviously in our climate, this time of year brings with it many unwanted germs. Should your child be complaining of any stomach pains, sore throats, etc or generally unwell, please keep them at home. It is advisable that if your child has had any vomiting or diarrhoea, that they remain at home for 24 hours after the last episode. Similarly, with other illnesses, please ensure your child has recovered before returning them to school.
This consideration not only prevents the spread of illness to other students but also to staff. Please encourage your children to wash their hands regularly and to cover their mouths when they cough. It is amazing how some simple good habits can help us protect each other.
Should your child be absent from school for any reason, please contact the school as soon as possible to avoid letters being sent home. If your child needs to be away from school for a lengthy time to recover from illness, again contact the school as soon as possible and we can arrange for some work to be sent home.

Fruit Juices

Many people think fruit juice is a healthy option. While fruit juice contains some vitamins, they lack fibre, antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruit. Fruit juices are high in sugar and energy, often containing similar quantities of sugar found in soft drink. Drinking large amounts can lead to tooth decay and excess energy consumption. Here are some things to consider if choosing juice:

Limit fruit juices to no more than half a glass per day.
Too much juice can lead to diarrhoea.
Consider diluting juice 50:50 with water to reduce the number of kilojoules whilst still enjoying the taste of juice.
It is easy to drink too much juice. One popper of juice is equal in energy to two pieces of fruit.
Consider eating a piece of fruit instead.
Whole pieces of fruit and veggies have higher levels of many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre, some of which are protective factors against some cancers and heart disease.

Thalgarrah Excursion - KG and K/1R

The KG and K1R excursion to Thalgarrah on Monday was a lovely day! The children learnt a lot and had fun too. We met some of the special animals that live at Thalgarrah including a curly leaf insect and Gillette the bearded dragon. Morning tea was a treat with celery trees, carrot rockets, fruit platters and some very exciting treats made with tiny teddy biscuits. The activities planned by Matt and Veda helped us to learn the secret of PAWS. (You will have to ask someone from KG or K1R what it is!) There was drama when we discovered that our bears and other furry friends had taken our lunches away but we were able to follow the clues and Matt's bear Theodore helped us to find them.

Community Breakfast

Each year, an important part of our school tradition is our annual breakfast in Term 4 where we join together as the Sandon Public School Community and the staff prepares breakfast for everyone who is able to attend.
On Thursday 8th November commencing at 7:30am, we invite all families to our annual Community Breakfast. Attached to the newsletter today is an RSVP which we would ask you to complete and return if you are intending to attend this important event on our yearly calendar. Please complete the RSVP by no later than Monday 5th November. We look forward to seeing you at our special breakfast.

Kindergarten Orientation

Thank you to all staff, parents and students who assisted with our Kindergarten Orientation Day on Thursday.

In particular I would like to thank Mr Earl who was responsible for much of the organisation of this event. Special thanks must go to Maria Baivucago and helpers for organising our special morning tea and to all parents who provided some of the delicious food served. Thanks also to the following parents for providing important information about aspects of our school Maria Baivucago (P and C and School Council) and Pam Dawson (school banking). As well, thanks to all parents of Kindergarten students who contributed to the morning tea.

Thanks also to Mrs Gadd for her very experienced presentation. Finally thanks to our fantastic students Hannah and Zac for their thoughtful and well-prepared speeches; and John and Sophia for their contribution. The morning was most successful and we can all be very proud of Sandon Public School.

Crunch and Sip

CRUNCH AND SIP Just a reminder to parents/carers that Sandon Public School is a Good for Kids Good For Life school and as part of this we encourage children to participate in our daily CRUNCH AND SIP program.

We would ask parents/carers to continue providing their children with:

* a piece of vegetable or fruit each day

* a small clear plastic water bottle to keep in the classroom (clear to ensure ‘water sipping only'.)

Sandon Turns 20!!!

"In '93 we joined as one our journey it began."

Last Monday evening, we held a very successful first meeting of our 20th Anniversary Planning Committee. Eight former parents, plus members of our current P and C attended the meeting. It was decided to hold the event just prior to the school fete in 2013. Vickey O'Brien (former member of staff and Community Member on School Council) has been elected to Chair the Committee. The next meeting for anyone wishing to assist will be held at 6:00pm on Monday 18th June.

Road Safety at Sandon

Once again I would ask that all parents/carers are vigilant in ensuring their child and other children are safe at our very busy morning and afternoon times at our school. Parking is scarce outside and this does mean that many of you need to walk a short distance to collect your child safely. I would also ask that parents/carers observe the parking signs.

NOTE: there is NO PARKING for parents INSIDE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. Parents of students with physical disabilities have EXCLUSIVE USE of the turning circle inside the school grounds before and after school. The turning circle is not to be used by parents other than those whose child has a disability. Parents called to school during the day to collect a sick child may use the turning circle.

There is also NO PARKING for parents in the BUS BAY. Collecting your child from the bus bay area is strongly discouraged. Parents are asked to PLEASE MEET YOUR CHILD AT THE FRONT GATE if bringing your child to and collecting your child from school.

We also ask that parents/carers

ensure you DO NOT WALK YOUR CHILDREN THROUGH THE TEACHER CAR PARK AND GATEWAY when bringing or collecting them from school;
please do not stop your car in the middle of the street and call your child out onto the busy street to get in the car.
ALWAYS USE the RTA pedestrian crossing supervisor to ensure your child crosses the road safely.
make sure your children use the footpath-side door when getting in and out of the car.
teach your child to STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! THINK! when crossing the road.

Please pass these safety messages on to anyone else who collects your child.

Grandparents' Day

As many of you know, each year Sandon Public School loves to celebrate GRANDPARENTS' DAY. Once again this year we are excited to welcome grandparents to the school to spend time with their grandchildren, participate in a picnic lunch and enjoy a small concert after lunch.

This year Grandparents' Day will be held on Thursday 5^th April. Please reserve this date in your diary and we will provide more detail for everyone shortly.

P and C Annual General Meeting

On Monday of this week, the P and C held their Annual General Meeting. Sincere thanks to the outgoing executive for all of their outstanding work in support of our school and students over the past twelve months. Especially, I would again like to acknowledge the tremendous commitment and dedication of Mrs Kathy Dobos (ex P and C President) for her outstanding efforts and leadership through the Sandon P and C Association and thank Kathy for all that she has done for our school over 19 years of service.

Harmony Day - Mini Olympics

This year to celebrate Harmony Day at Sandon Public School we have decided to hold a MINI OLYMPICS event. We will also have the Saudi Tent erected in the school grounds to teach children a little about the Saudi Culture.

Children will participate in the Mini Olympics in their Peer Support Groups and each Peer Support Group will represent a country on the day. Children will rotate in their Peer Support Groups around several fun tabloid activities and one of these will be a visit to the Saudi Tent.

Children are invited to come dressed in mufti for the day – with an ORANGE theme if possible please (the colour of Harmony Day). We would also love to see children come dressed in their national costume.

Parents / Carers are invited to attend the Mini Olympics event which will be held next Friday 30^th March 9:30am until 1:00pm. The day will commence with a brief Harmony Day Ceremony. We look forward to seeing you there – even if you can only come for a short period of time.

PRIORITY SCHOOLS PROGRAM (PSP) SURVEYS

AUTUMN FESTIVAL 2012 – ‘THE FOUR SEASONS OF ARMIDALE’

This week a note outlining our participation in the year's Autumn Festival was sent home. The theme this year is ‘The Four Seasons of Armidale'. Sandon Public School marches in the parade along with all of the other public schools in Armidale under the Banner of the Armidale Community of Schools.

Each year, many of our children love to participate in the parade which usually only lasts for about an hour on average. Children participating in the parade wear their full school uniform with school hat and decorations to represent the theme will be available on the day. Children are also asked to wear sunscreen and take a water bottle for hydration.

Please mark this date in your calendars as a fun way to be part of the wider Armidale Community. The Autumn Festival is being held on Saturday 17th March (12:00 for a 12:30 start) and we hope many of our children will be able to participate.

School Fete Tomorrow - Saturday March 10th - 10am

Swimming Carnival

Thank you to all of you who were able to attend our annual Swimming Carnival event this week.

Special thanks to the P and C who provided the BBQ during the event and to all parent helpers, As well, sincere thanks to the teaching and admin staff who both assisted in the organisation and attended the carnival. We can only hold this event at twilight due to the goodwill and generosity of the staff.

Food Allergies

Some children attending Sandon PS have food allergies and intolerances. In particular, a few students have severe allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. For this reason students are prohibited from sharing food and we ask that parents / carers reinforce this with their children.

We also ask that peanuts and products including peanuts not be sent to school in your child's lunchboxes to assist in avoiding anaphylactic reactions for those children affected.

If your child does suffer from allergies of any kind, please ensure that the school is made aware of this.

Welcome BBQ

Each year, Sandon Public School continues to try and promote healthy eating and living. As a Good for Kids Good For Life school we encourage children to participate in our daily CRUNCH AND SIP program.

As most of you know, this involves children bringing a piece of fruit or vegetable to school to ‘crunch' as part of a class break each day (each class teacher has their own regime for this). Children will also be encouraged to ‘sip' water only during lessons as appropriate.

We would ask parents/carers to continue providing their children with:

On Wednesday of this week we held our annual Community Breakfast. Once again, we had a wonderful turnout and the weather was just lovely. It is always wonderful to meet with families together over breakfast once a year to celebrate ourselves as the Sandon Public School Community.

Enormous thanks to Mrs McCulloch and Mrs Gadd for their planning and preparation prior to the day. Once again, sincere thanks to all staff and students who assisted on the morning in preparing, serving food and cleaning up afterwards. Finally, thank you also to Ces (our cleaner) and Roger (our GA) for their assistance and support behind the scenes. Thank you everyone.

Best Start Information Evening

We have planned a Best Start information evening for Thursday 24^th March 2011 at 6pm in the Kindergarten classrooms.

Ann Maree Risley, who is the Best Start consultant for the New England Region, will be attending to discuss the Best Start program and to talk about a new literacy initiative we are implementing in our school called L3.

Although both these programs involve the kindergarten classes we strongly encourage any interested parents to attend. Ann Maree is very knowledgeable and will be able to provide some practical advice for helping with literacy at home.

Sandon Fete - 2011

Autumn Festival

This week, parents/carers will have received a note outlining our participation in this year's Autumn Festival. We hope that many of our students can participate so that we can publicly celebrate the wonderful diversity we all enjoy so much at Sandon Public School.

Professional Learning

Each year, the staff of Sandon Public School engages in a program of professional learning in order to keep up with educational trends and training pertinent to the complex needs of the students for whom we care.

This year, we are most fortunate to have been accepted into an 18 month-long program called ‘Focus on Reading'. This program is designed to assist teachers in the further development and refinement of their skills in the teaching of reading. This program has a particular emphasis on the teaching of comprehension skills. Teachers will be working with Jennifer Andrews who is one of the Regional Quality Teaching Consultants.

Professional Learning

Last weekend all teachers from Sandon Public School attended a special lecture at UNE as part of our professional learning focus on the teaching of writing. In last week's newsletter, Mrs McCulloch provided information regarding the genre. The lecture staff attended provided strategies for the development of appropriate grammar and vocabulary within the context of teaching persuasive texts.

As well, throughout this term, all staff have been working with a consultant (Trudi Henderson) each Tuesday afternoon to further refine their skills in the teaching of the different components of literacy – reading, writing and talking and listening. We have been most appreciative of the program presented by Trudi.

Annual Community Breakfast

Each year, an important part of our school tradition is our annual breakfast in Term 4 where we join together as the Sandon Public School Community.

An additional purpose in holding our breakfast this year will be to take the opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful parents and community members who assist our work throughout the year in so many ways. Usually as most of you know, we have a special morning tea at the end of our Presentation Day ceremony to say our special thankyou but due to the logistics of not having our school hall at the moment, we are unable to do this.

On Wednesday 24^th November commencing at 7:30am, we invite all families to our annual Community Breakfast during which time we will acknowledge the work of all who in any way assisted our school throughout the year.

New England Sings

Staff Development Day

On Monday of this week, teachers spent time learning a little more about the VCOP program which I outlined for you in a newsletter later last term.

VCOP stands for VOCABULARY, CONNECTIVES, OPENERS and PUNCTUATION and provides students and teachers with a neat framework upon which they can focus during lessons to improve elements of a child's writing.

As well, teachers spent some time looking over some of our data from the 2010 NAPLAN test results to assist us in focusing on particular aspects of writing and spelling.

This term, all classes will be focusing on persuasive texts and vocabulary development as part of our writing program. We will provide more information to parents regarding VCOP and persuasive writing throughout the term.

School Self Evaluation Survey

As most parents know, each year our school undertakes two areas of self-evaluation. The first area this year was reading and the second area is focusing on aspects of teaching and learning. Parents, students and staff complete a survey to assist us in gaining feedback regarding these areas. As a result, survey data is collated and analysed. The information is reported back at both School Council and P and C Meetings. As well, the results of the self-evaluations are published in the 2010 Annual School Report.

Attached to the newsletter today is a survey which we would invite parents to take a few moments to complete and return to school by Friday 5^th November. The school values your feedback and suggestions and we look forward to receiving as many responses as possible to support us in ongoing improvement and refinement of the way we provide for the learning and development of each child attending our wonderful school.
